Residents of Kitui have a reason to smile after the launch of a mango processing plant worth KES 30 million . The launch which was held on October 30, 2015 has brought hope to more than 8000 farmers and is expected to improve the economic livelihood of Kitui County residents.
The intiative funded by IGAD and being implemented by NETFUND, is aimed at piloting a new approach to mango value addition by drying the mangoes and converting them mango powder. This means that post harvest loss could be minimised as the mango powder can be preserved and used over a long period of time.
The launch was a social marketing day where the participants including women groups from Kitui county had time to taste the products and give comments before the products are launched into the market. The Kitui community had also an opportunity to meet the partners of the project who included: Farm Africa and ACT.
The Chief guest at the launch was Kitui County Governor Dr Julius Makau Malombe who presided over the official opening.
