About Us
The present rate of exploitation of natural resource base on which economic growth of Kenya largely depends is unsustainable. Human activities which include agriculture, tourism, ranching, settlements and building infrastructure, often disregard the sustainable use of natural resources leading to environmental degradation. Natural ecosystems that store water, protect the soil, or are habitats for unique plants animals have been degraded or converted to other uses. The result has been the decimation of some animal and plant species to the point of extinction, the destruction of other species of great economic potential, and the devastation of ecosystems that are vital to human life.
This destruction reveals our collective failure to take responsibility for the utilization of our natural resources in a sustainable manner. Fortunately, a number of exemplary individuals, groups and organizations have made it their business to find ways to innovatively and sustainably protect and sustain the environment.
The Government of Kenya through the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) is keen to recognize and reward such initiatives particularly those that ensure best practice is adopted sustained and replicated. With its mandate from EMCA to develop, implement and sustain a National Environment Award (NEA), NETFUND created the Presidential Green Award (PGA) to provide incentives to recognize innovation, groundbreaking research, ideas, and extraordinary grass-root initiatives in Kenya. The ultimate goal of the award is to promote sustainable utilization and management of natural resources through rewarding best practice.
