The present rate of exploitation of natural resource base on which economic growth of Kenya largely depends is unsustainable. Human activities which include agriculture, tourism, ranching, settlements and building infrastructure, often disregard the sustainable use of natural resources leading to environmental degradation.

Natural ecosystems that store water, protect the soil, or are habitats for unique plants animals have been degraded or converted to other uses. The result has been the decimation of some animal and plant species to the point of extinction, the destruction of other species of great economic potential, and the devastation of ecosystems that are vital to human life.
