NETFUND Mobilizes partners for the The 7th Edition of the Annual Kaptagat Tree Planting Event

Over the last 6 years, NETFUND has been mobilizing resources to undertake annual forest conservation and support the Kaptagat Ecosystem programme which aims to restore the ecosystem as well support the communities living around the forest. This restoration program has registered tremendous success, including rehabilitation of over 1,100 Hectares by growing 1,320,000 assorted indigenous tree seedlings and distribution of 62,000 high-value avocado fruit tree seedlings to neighboring communities. This program is in line with the Presidential clarion call to combat the effects of climate change by growing 15 billion trees on 10.6 million hectares in every part of Kenya by 2032 to achieve a tree cover of 30%.

The 7th Edition of the Annual Tree Planting Event under the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme took place on 1st July 2023 at Kessup Forest Block, Elgeiyo-Marakwet County. The event was presided over by H.E the President Dr. William Ruto as the Chief Guest, who was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Governors, Senators, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries from public, private and development partners’ organizations. Local communities from Elgeyo Marakwet counties were also present. Over 400,000 assorted indigenous seedlings were planted for the 7th Edition at this translates to at least 400Ha rehabilitated. All seedlings were sourced from the local communities.

NETFUND, being the designated fundraising entity for the programme, appreciates the need for partnerships and collaboration to meet the budgetary cost for the programme and especially the purchase and planting of the seedlings. Through her efforts, the Fund mobilized 90 partners whose financial commitment support tallied to Kes. 17,600,000 and Kes. 36,022,500 in in-kind contribution (indigenous tree seedlings and avocado fruit tree seedlings). The local community through the various Community Forest Associations (CFAs) supported the programme by providing labor for site preparations and planting.
