Restoration and Sustainable Management of Cherangany Forest Ecosystems for Climate Change Resilience and Improved Livelihoods.
Project Description The project targets to enhance the ecosystem health and climate resilience of the Cherangany Forest Ecosystem for improved ecosystem services and community livelihoods. The focus will be on five broad intervention areas including; restoration of degraded ecosystems, sustainable land management practices, community livelihoods and nature-based enterprises, protection of forests and water towers as well as strengthening policies and governance structures. The goal of the project is “to sustainably restore and ensure sustainable management of the Cherangany Forest Ecosystems for climate change resilience and improved livelihoods.” The project is aligned, and contributes to the UN Sustainable Goals No. 1, 9, 13, 15. It is also aligned to the priority sectors of the key MEAs; UNCCD, UNFCCC and Biological Diversity. Further, the project supports achievement of the National Agenda such as Vision 2030 and the National Tree Growing and Restoration Programme to increasing Kenya’s tree cover to 30% by 2032.
Community livelihoods and adaptive capacity improved with women, youth and persons with disabilities benefiting through increased access to jobs and income generating opportunities;
Cherangany Forest Ecosystem restored and conserved with communities able to receive benefits from resources mobilized by the project;
Sustainable financing mechanism established and resources mobilized from public and private sources
Institutions and Communities adaptive capacity and resilience to impacts of climate disasters improved.
