A New Dawn For Lake Naivasha Basin

With pomp and colour, the scenic Lakeside town of Naivasha witnessed the official launch of the Lake Naivasha Basin Ecosystem-Based Management Project on April 14, 2025 marking the beginning of a bold new chapter in environmental stewardship for the region.

Presiding over the landmark occasion was Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Baraza, joined by Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ngeno, CEO NETFUND, Mr. Samson Toniok, representatives from the donor and a host of other distinguished guests and environmental actors. Their presence signified a powerful message: that the restoration and sustainable management of the Lake Naivasha Ecosystem was a national priority

The 3-year project is aimed at addressing ecosystem degradation and restoring biodiversity in the lake Naivasha Basin- a critical National treasure that is greatly threatened by degradation. The initiative is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through WWF US and executed by NETFUND—whose mandate and expertise position it as a key agency for sustainable environmental conservation in Kenya.

Speaking during the launch, CS Dr. Barasa emphasized the critical role of ecosystem-based management in tackling climate change, safeguarding biodiversity, and ensuring water security for surrounding communities. “This initiative is not just about conservation,” she said. “It’s about livelihoods, resilience, and reclaiming our ecological heritage.”

At the heart of this project lies a deep understanding that true environmental stewardship must be collaborative. It will draw from local knowledge, science, and inclusive governance to create a model of sustainability that others across the country can emulate.

As the sun set over Lake Naivasha, one thing was clear—the journey has begun. And with it, a wave of optimism now flows through the basin, carrying the hopes of a community ready to protect what is theirs, not just today, but for the generations yet to come.
