Tackling Climate Change

Why Locally Led Solutions Must Drive Climate Resilience

Climate change is reshaping livelihoods across Kenya, from prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall to floods that devastate crops and displace communities. While these challenges are global in scale, the most effective solutions are often designed and implemented at the local level, where communities directly experience the impacts. One of the most powerful of these approaches lies in Nature-based Solutions (NbS) actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems while addressing climate challenges and supporting human well-being. NbS demonstrate that environmental protection and economic development are not opposing goals but mutually reinforcing.

Yet, while NbS hold immense promise, they often remain underfunded. Communities face challenges in accessing sustainable financing and technical support. Without investment, their ability to scale and meaningfully contribute to Kenya’s climate goals is limited. In Kenya, the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) is at the forefront of promoting nature-based solutions (NbS) as a strategic approach to addressing Kenya’s pressing environmental and climate change resilience.

In advancing these efforts, NETFUND has prioritized targeted interventions within critical ecosystems across the country. In Kakamega, home to Kenya’s only tropical rainforest, NETFUND, working alongside local community groups, has taken action to address forest degradation by undertaking forest protection, promoting eco-tourism, and enhancing alternative livelihoods to reduce reliance on forest resources.

In the Cherangany Ecosystem, one of Kenya’s key water towers, NETFUND, with support from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, is supporting local communities engage in sustainable income-generating activities including tree planting, agroforestry, and alternative livelihoods. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that conservation and economic empowerment go hand in hand. Similarly, in the Kaptagat ecosystem, the Fund is driving large-scale tree growing and rehabilitation initiatives aimed at combating land degradation, enhancing carbon sequestration, and securing climate resilience. Together, these nature-based interventions demonstrate NETFUND’s commitment to conserving Kenya’s natural heritage while improving the socio-economic well-being of its people.

Still, across the country, NETFUND is promoting initiatives that demonstrate how locally led initiatives can meaningfully strengthen livelihoods and build resilience. In Mathioya Sub-County, Murang’a County, NETFUND, in partnership  with Magiro Hydro-Electricity Limited (MHEL)/Hydrobox, is empowering women and youth in agri-business through access to clean energy. A hydropower plant in Mihuti Village built from recycled bicycle parts and simple engines now generates affordable electricity from River Gondo. This innovation has reduced dependence on kerosene, improved health, powered small businesses, and opened new green growth opportunities in rural value chains.

In Kirinyaga County, the program is supporting smallholder farmers adapt to climate change. Through promotion of climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy adoption, and capacity building, the program has equiped farmers especially, women and youth with the tools to sustainably improve yields while protecting the environment. The initiative reduces vulnerability to climate shocks and strengthens farming systems against future risks.

The potential of NbS in the fight against climate change are immense. Kenya can create thousands of green jobs for climate resilience, restore degraded landscapes, and secure vital yet threatened ecosystems. The risks of neglect are equally serious: ecosystem collapse, food and water insecurity, and deepened vulnerability to climate shocks. NETFUND is therefore, calling on partners to join in expanding NbS across Kenya to  ensure that local solutions not only address the climate crisis but also drive a greener, more resilient economy.
