Forest and Land Restoration Action for Kenya’s NDC (FLaRAK) Project
Project Title:
Project Description
The project identifies the urgent need to design sustainable measures to resolve systemic barriers that continue to hinder sustainable tree growing and unmitigated ecosystem and land degradation. The project utilized a four-prong strategy:
a. Strengthening forest governance,
b.Enhancing production capacity and accessibility of certified and quality seedlings
c.Piloting and scaling up appropriate technologies for tree growing; and
d.Sensitizing and mobilizing the public to participate in tree growing activities.
The project is aligned and contributes to the National Program and ambitions to increase Kenya’s tree cover to 30% by the year 2032.
NETFUND APPROACH
NETFUND is one of the entities supporting the implementation of the project, specifically 3 components, as follows;
Build capacity of women, youth, and Persons Living with Disabilities in the production of quality seedlings as well as tree planting and growing activities.
Providing for the active involvement of vulnerable and marginalized groups in the society in the reafforestation and conservation efforts to be implemented. Protection, rehabilitation, and restoration of public forests and degraded landscapes.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENT
Rehabilitated 250 ha in Kaptagat, 20 ha in Kakamega forest and 15 ha in Enoosupukia forest.
Enhanced protection of Kakamega Forest through erection of a 15 km electric fence.
10 community groups consisting of the most vulnerable (youth and women) supported to establish apiaries and tree nurseries with a capacity of 100,000 seedlings each in Suswa-Magadi and Kakamega ecosystems respectively. 5 groups supported with 50 beehives each.
Empowered 1,348 farmers in Kaptagat ecosystem through distribution of avocado seedlings
Supported Penon and Kaptagat CFAs in apiary establishment by providing them with 75 beehives each.
